From Stephanie Herself:

“Sofia and I had been message back and forth for awhile trying to sort out a date to shoot. Then it finally happened, the last full moon of 2020. I just knew this is it. I have loved her work for so long, and the night shoots she does always have drawn me in.

I have always been mesmerized by the moon and knew this experience would be amazing.
I couldn’t have imagined how amazing it turned out.

The night was beyond amazing, it touched my soul.
Sofia made the night unforgettable, each location more magical then the next.
The wind started to pick up, so she gave me hand warmers.. that the kindness Sofia is.

I went out on this shoot thinking it would be a great time, I was wrong.
I came out with more appreciation for the silence of a winters night, the ever so powerful moon and the best of all, I came out with a women who showed me how to make myself shine in the darkness nights.

Forever you have touched my heart. Love ya Sofia

Taryn | Nicturna 2020 Final New Moon of the Year | Kananaskis Night Photoshoot

This Nicturna Session was on the last new moon of 2020.

A dark sky night out in the Kananaskis Country area.

Taryn is a dear friend of mine and Bride to be.

This Nicturna Session was to celebrate her and have a little night adventure together.

Thanks for the adventure Taryn.
xo Sof.

From Taryn Herself:

There’s an indescribable feeling I get when I am surrounded by the mountains, with only the sound of the snow crunching under my boots. It’s the feeling of being small, in the way that melts all of your problems as your surroundings absorb you completely.

How magical it was to have Sofia capture this feeling as stars dazzled overhead.

Sonu & Aria | Mother Daughter Star Chasing Night Photoshoot

“Life is not a problem to be solved but a reality to be experienced.”

Søren Kierkegaard {Danish philosopher}

The day has come.

Someone convinced me to photograph a kiddo on one of these night star chasing shoots.

And I loved it.

Working with Aria was super fun.

She’s the kiddo in these photos. She was excited to go out in the night with her Mom in the mountains. She warmed up to me and my assistant super quick, showing us her neon glow sticks she brought along.

When we were setting up for the first shot (above) she said,

“SHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! You can hear the owls.”

And indeed. The owls were howling. The noise was coming from towards the Moon rising over the mountain (It looks like a sun in these photos). She and me both recorded the sound on our phones. She wanted to have a video to show her other family members the next day.

I have never in my entire night shooting career for years, heard an owl at night. It took a curious lil Aria to make me slow down on this shoot and enjoy the moment.

Thank you Aria. You taught me a valuable lesson that night. To take my time and enjoy those owls howling more often.

Enjoy some images to jog the memory Aria and Sonu.

xo. Sof.

From Sonu (Aria’s Mom):

"It's been about a month since our experience with Sofia and it still feels like yesterday.

Notice that I said experience, and not photoshoot...because this was adventure, this was magic and an experiment from the start. I loved that Sofia took the time to really understand the why behind our photos and be authentic to her style and approach so that we could level set and ensure that our time together was FUN.

There were no surprises for me in her approach and the process, which made venturing into the unknown stress free. It let Sofia focus on her craft and my daughter and I focus on just being in the moment.

When you're in that type of zone, the pictures feel secondary...and ironically enough that's when the shots tend to be perfect. My daughter and I still remember the night vividly, every shot, the jokes, the camaraderie. We went into it trying something new and came out with it having connected with some talented souls and frankly good human beings.

We were the first mother/daughter duo...Sofia took a chance on us, and I'm so glad she did. Because she gifted us a fabulous memory of an evening chasing stars in our backyard something we'll remember forever."

Kimmi's Nicturna Session | Super Moon 2020

The Tale of Two Diamond Rings.

“Walking.

I am listening to a deeper way.

Suddenly all my ancestors are behind me.

Be still, they say.

Watch and listen.

You are the result of the love of thousands.”

Linda Hogan

From the first email I received from Kimmi, I knew I HAD to work with her.

She wrote me an inquiry unlike any I have received before.

It was written like a beautiful story in a poetic fashion and left me literally in tears after reading how she wrote about the women in her family.

I felt honoured to photograph this beautiful soul on the rare super new moon recently. Here are some words from Kimmi herself to share with you all.

Enjoy this special Nicturna Session blog friends.

xo. Sof.

The two rings are quite symbolic, and I think truly reflects my story.

I wrote a little summary of how I feel:

I hear "it" when my mother recounts the memories of my great grandmother's remarkably mysterious and bewitching beauty. I sense "it" when my mom speaks of my grandmother's profound sense of empathy and maternal steadfastness in the face of adversity. I see "it" when I observe my own mother's extraordinary affinity with plants. Now as my life proceeds to shift, I am starting to discern this perplexing "it" within myself. The sense is difficult to describe in words. What I feel is a deep-rooted, intriguing, and mystical sensuality. What I recognize is that it passed down through our matrilineal line, something I don't quite yet understand, but know that I will with time.

It's the small things in the stories that stand out, like my great grandmother's penchant for old Chinese healing spells, or herbs they would cultivate in the garden as medicine. I remember these things sounding so absurd when I was a child but

it started to make more sense as time went on. It just fits with the soul somehow.

About the two rings:

Many natural diamonds are between 1 to 3 billion years old. There is an enduring history behind these stones, which are also regarded as amulets of motherhood.

My grandmother's diamond reminds me that I am part of the collective power of the women from my maternal bloodline. Like the diamond, we females are untamable and exquisitely formed under pressure.

My engagement diamond doesn't possess the same history as my grandmother's diamond, but it still holds immense potential. I can't wait to see the story that unfolds.
