OUR STORY
and I create ritual-based photography experiences under the night sky.
For over a decade, I’ve photographed weddings and moments of love and light. But a few years ago, something in me began to ache for the dark.
My mother had passed. I was leaving a 9 year relationship. And one night, under a new moon sky in Iceland, I remembered how much comfort and beauty can be found in the space between.
And so began, Nicturna
I’M SOFIA
Iceland 2012 || a moment that changed everything
What first began as guiding women to meet themselves in the dark, has now become a space I help women, couples, siblings, friends, humans, reconnect with themselves in new ways.
We bring cacao, smoke, letters to burn, jewelry that once belonged to someone we loved. We sit in silence. We breathe. And when the shutter opens, what’s revealed is not a pose, it’s a return
That’s what Nicturna is. A space to mark thresholds, honour lineage, and let the night witness your becoming.
ROOTS & RITUAL
My roots are Mexican, and this work carries my culture’s reverence for ceremony.
I use copal, cinnamon, and marigolds folded into the smoke that blesses every session.
We work with the moon’s rhythm: new moons for beginnings, full moons for release.
In Spanish, to smoke cleanse is called to limpia meaning “to clean.”
Each Nicturna session is a limpia of the soul, a clearing through art, story, and sky.
THE OWL
My mother, Odette, shows up as an owl.
In Mexico, the owl is known as a messenger between worlds,
a quiet guardian of the night.
For me, it is how love returns.
Winged. Watching. Present.
Her presence reminds me that even in darkness, there is guidance.
Nicturna exists because of her.
Every photo is an ofrenda…
an offering for the ones we love,
for who we have been,
and for who we are becoming.
